A dropper post buys more descending confidence per dollar than any suspension upgrade. Here is what it changes, how to size travel, and the riders who should stay rigid.
The short answer
If you ride anything that points downhill and you do not have a dropper post, fit one before you upgrade anything else. It changes body position, which changes handling, which changes what you are willing to ride. The exceptions are narrow: XC racers on smooth courses counting grams, and riders on tight budgets whose frames have no internal routing and no easy external option. Everyone else, including hardtail riders, gets more from a dropper than from a fork upgrade costing three times as much.
A dropper post is a seatpost that slides down inside the frame when you press a lever, and springs back up when you press it again unweighted. That description makes it sound like a convenience item, which is why so many riders postpone buying one. It is not a convenience item. It is a geometry item.
What a dropper actually changes
On a climb you want the saddle high, so your leg extends properly and your weight sits over the bottom bracket. On a descent you want the opposite: weight low and back, knees and elbows bent, the bike free to move underneath you. A fixed post satisfies one of those at a time, and most riders compromise by setting the saddle slightly low, which wrecks pedalling efficiency and still leaves the saddle in the way.
Dropping the saddle 150mm does two measurable things.
It lowers your centre of mass. Your body is most of the mass of the bike and rider system. Getting your hips down lowers the whole system’s centre of gravity, which reduces how much a given bump can rotate you forward over the front wheel.
It unlocks body position. With the saddle out of the way you can get your hips back on steep sections, drop your heels, and shift weight side to side in corners. That range of movement is what “confidence” actually means on a mountain bike, and it is what stops you riding the brakes. Riders usually get faster and calmer at the same time, which almost no other component change does.
It changes cornering more than you expect
Riders talk about droppers as a steep-descent tool, but the biggest gain is often in flat, fast corners. With the saddle down you can weight the outside pedal and drive the bike into the turn without the saddle catching your inner thigh.

The weight column is where the argument usually happens. A dropper adds roughly 300 to 400 g over an alloy rigid post. That is real, and it is also less than a full water bottle.
Internal vs External Routing
Modern frames have a port near the head tube and a cable run inside the down tube. If yours does, buy an internally routed post and accept that installation means fishing a cable through a frame.
If your frame has no port, you are not excluded. Externally routed droppers run the cable along the outside of the seat tube. They work identically, cost slightly less, and look slightly worse. The only real downside is exposure: the cable can snag on undergrowth or get damaged in a crash.
Check insertion depth before you order
The most common dropper buying mistake is ordering more travel than the frame will swallow. Measure from the top of the seat tube to the first obstruction inside it (a bottle cage bolt, a bend, a suspension pivot). That number, minus the post’s stack height, is what you have to work with. If in doubt, buy less travel. A 150mm post you can fully insert beats a 200mm post that leaves your saddle 30mm too high.
Choosing travel
Travel is limited by two things: your inseam and your frame.
- Inseam. Broadly, riders with a 28 inch inseam or less are usually looking at 100 to 125mm; 29 to 31 inches, 150mm; 32 inches and up, 170 to 200mm. This is a starting point, not a rule.
- Frame. Do the insertion measurement above. Short seat tubes on modern frames have made long droppers possible, but full suspension frames with a kinked seat tube can stop a post dead.
Several brands sell travel adjustable posts that shim down 10 to 20mm internally. If you are between sizes, that flexibility is worth paying for.
Cable, Hydraulic or Wireless
Cable actuated is the default and the right answer for most riders. A standard shifter cable pulls a valve at the base of the post. Cheap to service, cheap to replace, and if the cable frays you can still ride with the post locked in one position.
Hydraulic posts use a sealed fluid line instead of a cable. The action is smooth and free of cable friction, but a bleed is a workshop job and a damaged line ends the ride rather than degrading it.
Wireless removes the cable entirely, turning a fiddly installation into a five minute job. You pay roughly double, you carry a battery, and you have to charge it. If your routing is already sorted, wireless solves a problem you no longer have. If your frame is awkward, it can be worth every dollar.
Reliability and Service
Droppers have a reputation for failing that is roughly a decade out of date. Current posts from established brands are reliable, but they are not maintenance free, and the neglected ones are the ones that fail.
The routine that prevents almost all problems takes 60 seconds a month: drop the post, wipe the stanchion clean, put a drop of suspension oil or a smear of grease on the seal, cycle it a few times. Grit sitting on the seal is the primary killer.
Beyond that, expect a full service every one to two years depending on how wet your riding is. Many posts use a sealed cartridge a shop swaps in minutes; some are rebuildable at home. Check before buying, because a post with no service kit is a disposable post.
Never carry the bike by the saddle
Lifting the whole bike by the saddle with the post extended loads the internals in the direction they are least designed for. Lift by the frame.
Who Should Genuinely Stay Rigid
This is the part most dropper articles skip.
- XC racers on smooth courses. If your race is fire road and grass with no technical descending, the weight penalty is real and the benefit is small. Plenty of XC racers now run droppers anyway, because modern courses got rougher, but if yours has not, a rigid carbon post is a defensible choice.
- Riders on a genuinely tight budget with an awkward frame. If the frame has no internal routing and the cheapest workable option is a large fraction of what the bike is worth, spend the money on tyres and brake pads first. - Bikes that never leave tarmac. A commuter or a flat-path hybrid gains nothing.
Notice that “I ride a hardtail” is not on this list. Hardtail riders rely entirely on body position to absorb terrain, so being able to get into position matters more, not less.

The mainstream choice for good reason. Cable actuation is cheap to fix, easy to adjust and degrades gracefully if the cable frays. Look for a post with a low stack height (the fixed distance between the collar and the saddle rails), because that is what determines whether you can run full travel. Buy from a brand that sells service kits and publishes a rebuild procedure, and it should last many seasons of regular wiping and annual servicing.
